CHOOSING THE VARIETY OF CODE
A
person might use different code when he/she talks to different people. This choice
of code is determined by several factors, such as to whom he/she is talking,
the social context of the talk, and the function and topic of the discussion. This
is very useful, particularly when it is used to describe code choice in large
speech community, to talk at typical interaction involving these factors.
Domains
of language use involves typical interaction between typical participants in
typical setting, such as family, friendship, school, and work place. However,
the domains themselves are not enough because their components do not always
fit with each other. There are, in addition to domains, dimensions influencing
code choice. They are the social distance, status, formality and functions.
FORMATIVE
TEST 1
What are
three social factors used by Holmes (1992) to determine the language choice in
many different kinds of speech community?
The addressee (to whom is talking), the
social context of the talk and the function and the topic of the discussion
Fishman (1972) uses the
terms ‘domains’ of language use to identify patterns of code choice. Write your
brief explanation about the most common domain of language use!
Family domain involves the conversation with
family members at home about topics related to family matters.
Friendship domain is a conversation with a
friend about how to play beach volley ball.
Religions domain is in the mosque, talking
about religious matters, and some other domains.
What are
the advantages of using domains of language use in determining patterns of code
choice?
First, it forces us to be very clear about
which domain and varieties are relevant to language choice.
Second, it provides a clear basis for
comparing patterns of code choice in different speech communities .
Third, it is useful for a new comer in a
community as a summary of appropriate patterns of code use in that community.
Why are the domains
themselves not enough to describe the factors affecting code choice?
Because they are not always congruent and
whitin any domain individual interactions may not be typical. People may select
a particulat variety or code because it makes it easier to discuss a particulat
topic, regardless of where they are speaking.
Explain some other dimensions,
in addition to domains, that can influence code choice!
a.
Social distance
b.
Status
c.
Formality
d.
function
